Heidelberg Wind Ensemble - Our Conductor


 

Stephen Carpenter

Stephen is a graduate from the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education, he also holds a Master or Arts (Music) from Monash University. Stephen taught in the Victorian State School system for seven years where he held positions as an Instrumental Music Teacher at various suburban Melbourne High Schools.

In 1987, he was appointed to the position of Head of Woodwind Studies at Yarra Valley Anglican School. He played clarinet and saxophone, specialising on bass clarinet and baritone saxophone, with the RAA 3rd Division Band, one of the bands of the Army Reserve, from 1980 - 88. During 1989, he was on teacher-exchange as a Band Director to Oconomowoc Senior High School in Wisconsin, USA. While there, he studied conducting with Professor James Smith of the University of Wisconsin, Madison; H. Robert Reynolds of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and Mallory Thompson of the University of Florida, Tampa.

He continued his conducting studies after coming back to Australia with Dr. James Croft of the Florida University, Tallahassee. He has extensive experience as a tutor and manager with MYMC and January Music Camps, and was the Principal Conductor of the John Antill Youth Band from 1991 to 1995 & 2000 to 2002. He was the Associate Conductor of the Eastern Youth Laureate Wind Symphony 1990; invited Guest Conductor for the South West Region Music Festivals at Deniliquin 1990 and 1991 and the Geelong Summer Music Camp 1993, 1994 and 1996.

He has had a Musicology paper published in the German Journal “Clarino” (April, 2000) and IGEB invited him to present a paper on Percy Grainger at the Eighth International World Conference of WASBE at Schladming, Austria, 1997. He is also a contributing author of an article in the publication ‘Currency Companion to Music and Dance in Australia’.

He was the founding Musical Director of the Monash University Wind Symphony and was principal conductor of this ensemble from 1993-2000.

Stephen has been successful in initiating several wind band, orchestral and chamber ensemble commissions from Australian composers to raise the profile of Australian composers writing for student musicians. His professional activities include adjudication of Band competitions for the Melbourne School Bands Festival, ABODA Level Festivals, the Victorian Bands League, and the VSMA.

In January 2004 and 2005, Stephen was one of the principal clinicians for the ABODA Summer Conductor’s Clinic. He was the Director of Music at Yarra Valley Anglican School from 1990 to 1995.

He is currently Head of Music: TRSC, at Ivanhoe Grammar School, where he teaches classroom music and is responsible for conducting the Senior School Golden Symphonic Orchestra and the Locksley Symphonic Band.
