About the Heidelberg Orchestras -History
 

Heidelberg Orchestra Inc. is a non-profit community organization registered under the Australian Government Register of Cultural Organizations.

History
Heidelberg Orchestra was founded in 1978 by a local violin teacher, Alma Robertson as the Heidelberg Youth Orchestra. The founding principles of the Heidelberg Youth Orchestra were to:

  • promote music in the community provide musical training and tuition for musicians and prospective musicians of any age
  • form and manage groups to perform music privately or publicly in the community and to undertake tours of those groups
  • broaden the musical experience of any person hold concerts either alone or in association with other person or organizations
  • conduct such activities as are incidental to the promotion of the of the above purposes


In May 1987 the name was changed to Banyule Orchestras Inc. In March 2001 the name was changed to its current name, Heidelberg Orchestras Inc.

Heidelberg Orchestras currently consists of four separate performing groups:

The Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra (HSO)

HSO is a dynamic orchestra for players who enjoy exciting and challenging works, performing with select guest artists, and the opportunity to refine orchestral and performance skills.

Heidelberg Wind Ensemble (HWE)

HWE is our newest performance ensemble established in 2007. This ensemble will appeal to skilled amateur musicians who would likes to perform in a wind ensemble dealing with serious and challenging wind ensemble repertoire.

Robertson Youth Orchestra (RYO)

RYO is a musical forum for intermediate orchestral players. Its objective is to develop a sound knowledge of orchestral and cultural performance skills in a fun and social atmosphere.

Junior Strings of Banyule (JSB)

JSB is a forum for young string players. Its aim is to build and refine orchestral performance skills in a fun, learning environment. Heidelberg Wind Ensemble (HWE) HWE is a new performance ensemble being established in 2007. This ensemble is designed to appeal to the skilled amateur musician who wants to perform in a wind ensemble that will be dealing with the serious and challenging wind ensemble repertoire.

Management and Operations

The affairs of the HOI are governed by a Board of Management consisting of a Chair Person, Secretary, Treasurer, the Music Director and up to two representatives from each ensemble, who are elected at the annual general meeting of the HOI.

The committee is responsible for controlling and managing the affairs of the HOI with the power to undertake any acts that it believes are essential for the proper management of the business and affairs of the HOI, subject to the Constitution and the rules set out in the Associations Incorporation Act 1981.
