In the final concert for 2022, Nightscapes showcases the romance of Rachmaninoff and contemporary soundscapes inspired by photography of 1950s. Rachmaninoff was considered to be one of the finest pianists of his day and one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian Classical music. His Symphonic Dance No. 1 is a work that is fully representative of the composer’s late style with its curious, shifting harmonies. Guest Artist Hoang Pham returns to perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, brimming with virtuosity and melodies that live long in our memories.
HSO’s affinity with composer Michael Daugherty continues with the Australian premiere of Night Owl, inspired by nocturnal photography and sound recordings of Ogle Winston Link. Daugherty takes listeners through Link’s stunning photographic account of the last days of steam locomotive powered trains in late 1950s America.
