Thomson | The River |
Tomasi | Trumpet Concerto |
Arban | Fantasia on Carnival of Venice for Trumpet & Orchestra |
Gould | Symphonette No. 4 ('Latin-American') |
Thomson’s music for the documentary, The River, a film which focused on the abuses of America’s waterways, culminating in the catastrophic Mississippi River flood of 1937. Video footage of this film will be shown as this work is performed, with kind permission granted by the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library.
The following two works for solo trumpet impressively showcase the virtuosity and incisive lyricism of this wonderful brass instrument. Morton Gould in Symphonette No. 4 makes use of the Latin-American idioms and dance forms such as the rhumba, tango, guaracha and conga that will enthrall you with its toe-tapping rhythms and infectiously pleasing melodies.
Prior to the HSO concert, ticket holders are eligible to attend Twilight Concerts by Junior Strings of Banyule & Robertson Youth Orchestra from 5.00-6.30pm, and the Heidelberg Wind Ensemble from 7.00 – 7.30pm.
